A suspect was in custody Tuesday morning after shots were fired near the John C. Kluczynski Federal Building in downtown Chicago.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said early Tuesday morning, a Federal Protective Service officer reported an "active shooter" near the federal office building, at 230 S. Dearborn St. Chicago police said a man was seen outside firing a gun. The initial call came in around 4:40 a.m.
The DHS said there was minor damage to federal property.
A bullet hole was also seen in the window of the Central Standard Building, which spans the square block from Clark Street west to LaSalle Street and from Quincy Street south to Jackson Boulevard and houses Wintrust financial offices. Its Clark Street frontage, lined with Ionic columns, is right across from Federal Plaza.
It was unclear how many directions the shooter was firing in, and what exactly his target was. It was also unclear what led up to the shooting.
No one was struck by gunfire or injured, authorities said.
Chicago police arrested the suspect, the DHS said. A gun was recovered, police said.
Dozens of DHS and Chicago police officers were out in force along Clark Street at the western edge of Federal Plaza early Tuesday. Investigators were seen collecting shell casings and bullet fragments from the scene, and numerous evidence markers were set down.
Dispatch audio indicated about 15 shell casings at the scene. Police have not confirmed how many shots they believe were fired.
The Kluczynski Federal Building houses offices for several federal agencies, including the Department of Labor, the DHS, and the IRS. It also houses the offices of U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both Illinois Democrats.
The Kluczynski Building is located on Federal Plaza across Dearborn Street from the Dirksen Federal Courthouse.
The Trump administration announced plans to sell the Kluczynski Building and 10 other Chicago buildings owned by the federal government in March 2025, but no sale of the Kluczynski Building has gone ahead.
Charges were pending against the man who was arrested Tuesday morning as Belmont Area CPD detectives continued to investigate.
The DHS also said the investigation remained active, and that additional information will be limited for now.
